Youth steps up to help the community as a safe distancing ambassador

During this circuit breaker period, safe distancing ambassadors have been deployed all around Singapore to ensure that everyone abides by the safe distancing measures.

A job specially created for this circuit breaker period, safe distancing ambassadors encourage people to practice safe distancing and remind them to wear masks in public.

Wanting to lend a helping hand during the circuit breaker period, 29-year-old Muhammad Faizal recently came forward to be a safe distancing ambassador.

The full-time GrabFood rider found out about the safe distancing ambassador role after reading Youth.SG and National Environment Agency (NEA)’s Facebook posts.

“I chose to become a safe distancing ambassador because people need our help during this period. I also wanted to pick up new skills,” said Faizal.

After writing to Youth.SG in mid-April to find out more about the role, we linked him up with the People’s Association to help him sign up as a safe distancing ambassador.

Being able to help others during this period was rewarding for Faizal as he enjoys talking to fellow Singaporeans on the job.

“The people around me felt happy for me when they knew I wanted to sign up as a safe distancing ambassador, because they know that I love to help others,” said Faizal.

Despite the challenges some ambassadors face on the job, such as receiving rude remarks and even getting physically abused, Faizal remained optimistic.

Faizal recalled: “Initially, I thought it would be hard. I did my duty at Hougang, and the people there were very nice. They listened to us and followed the rules well.”

Although not many of his friends have signed up to be a safe distancing ambassador, Faizal shared that it may be hard for those who are busy with their jobs.

He also hopes for other youths to consider signing up as a safe distancing ambassador if they are able to commit.

“You can learn new things and pick up new skills through the role,” added Faizal.
