Yip Pin Xiu sets four new world records at 2022 Australian Short Course Championships
This marks the first time that Team Singapore’s quartet of Pin Xiu, Wong Zhi Wei, Danielle Moi, and Darren Chan participated in a short-course campaign.
Yip Pin Xiu has set four new world records at the 2022 Australian Short Course Championships, which took place at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre from Aug 24 to 27.
Pin Xiu broke her first record – the women’s S2 200m free – on the first day of the event, where she set a timing of 4:57.81 and earned her first gold medal.
She later broke the 100m back and free records with a timing of 2:20.57 and 2:26.51 respectively. While the 100m back record was set in the event finals, the 100m free record was set in the preliminary stage as Pin Xiu withdrew from the finals.
Her fourth and final world record was set on the final day of the competition, where she finished in the women’s S2 50m back event with a timing of 1:06.87.
Apart from her four newly-set world records, Pin Xiu also holds the current world records for the S2 50m free and back long-course titles.
During the four-day championship, Singapore’s quartet of Pin Xiu, Wong Zhi Wei (S13), Danielle Moi (S14) and Darren Chan (S14) were able to secure a total five medals.
Three of which were gold medals, and were all earned by Pin Xiu. The other two medals were won by Zhi Wei and Danielle.
Zhi Wei earned the silver medal in the men’s 50m breaststroke, while Danielle earned the bronze medal in the women’s 50m fly.
Danielle and Darren also narrowly missed out on a bronze medal following fourth-place finishes in the women’s 100m fly and men’s 100m breaststroke finals respectively on Aug 27.
This also marked the quartet’s first time competing in a short-course campaign.
Over in Indonesia, para shuttlers Xavier Lim and Ang Chee Hiong each earned a bronze medal in the FOX Indonesia 2022 Para Badminton International competition.
The tournament, which similarly spanned across four days, saw the two earn their first ever international medals.
