TP graduate creates vehicle inspection device for LTA, used to check for illegal modifications

The device allows officers to get different shooting angles when conducting checks in the undercarriage of vehicles, which can be low and difficult to access.

A Temasek Polytechnic (TP) graduate has created a vehicular inspection device (VID) that enables enforcement officers to inspect vehicles for illegal modifications.

In a partnership with the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the device was created by 21-year-old Muhammad Haziq Bin Roslan, a recent graduate from the polytechnic’s Diploma in Mechatronics programme.

A total of 14 VIDs will eventually be delivered to LTA and progressively deployed by the end-2023.

The VID is a portable, remote-controlled device equipped with a movable camera and an attached light.

This allows different shooting angles when conducting checks in the undercarriage of vehicles, which can be low and difficult to access.

It also allows officers to have real-time video footage streamed directly to a mobile device via a secure web application. The device has the ability to traverse different car parks and road surfaces, allowing checks to be made safely and more effectively.

In an interview with The Straits Times, Haziq explained that it took him six months to build the device under the guidance of the senior lecturer of engineering, Peter Lim.

TP also shared that it will continue to resolve issues faced with the first four devices before releasing the remaining 10.

TP’s Director of the School of Engineering, Song Kwok Yuen, said that the institution is  “excited to partner LTA on this innovative solution for vehicle undercarriage inspections”.

“The success of this project is a testament to the innovative spirit and strong expertise of our students and staff at Temasek Polytechnic,” he added.
