Three things I learnt from a day at 4Fingers

Nothing prepared me for the heat from the kitchen.

Ordering a meal at any fast food outlet is relatively easy. You place your order at the counter and within minutes, your meal is ready.

But have you ever wondered what goes behind the scenes in this fast-paced food and beverage line?

I had a chance to experience working at local crispy fried chicken chain 4Fingers for a day, and it was one hell of an experience!

For my brief stint, I stepped out from my cosy air-conditioned office and entered the humid kitchen at 4Fingers’ Orchard Gateway outlet. I had a taste of customer service duties and prepared a few batches of crispy fried chicken for consumption.

While I have worked as a waitress in various cafés in the past, nothing prepared me for the three things I learnt while working at 4Fingers for a day.

1. It’s made with a whole lot of love!

If you’re wondering what’s the winning recipe behind the tangy goodness of their crispy fried chicken, I’ll tell you one thing – it is all made with flavourful love.

The chicken wings – and all of 4Fingers’ fried items – are placed in a fryer for a careful amount of time (which is kept secret) to ensure the perfect level of crispiness.
EACH CHICKEN WING IS BRUSHED WITH YOUR FAVOURITE SAUCES, SOY GARLIC AND HOT.

Despite working at lightning speed, the kitchen staff brushed each chicken wing with precision, so that you can enjoy the same savoury flavours each time you order a meal here.

2. It is not as easy as you think it is.

Working in a fast food environment is fast-paced and requires a lot of focus. Every time I looked at the screen that listed down all the orders, I felt extremely anxious. It was confusing and terrifying, especially for a first-timer!
THE SCREEN OF TERROR.

However, the kitchen staff was organised, despite the space constraints and the merciless heat from the fryers. The team of six worked like a well-oiled machine, preparing the orders promptly and efficiently.

I found myself being aided by the staff, even though they were busy. Eventually, I managed to complete about two orders all by myself. #smallvictories

3. Friendly customers are the best.

I also had a chance to work at the front of house, where I interacted with customers and keyed in orders. It wasn’t much of a stretch from what I used to do as a waitress, but it was definitely confusing. It certainly reminded me of the times I had to serve all sorts of customers.

Thankfully, most of the customers greeted me and placed their orders with a smile, which definitely made my day.
WORKING IN CUSTOMER SERVICE ISN’T TOO BAD, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU MEET FRIENDLY FACES.

I might have left the kitchen smelling like fried chicken and kimchi, but I wouldn’t mind doing it again. Simply because the brief experience I had in preparing delicious fried chicken and cheerfully greeting customers has taught me the value of blue collar jobs.

Most importantly, I left with plenty of food for thought about the people who work tirelessly to prepare the delicious food in this industry. #salute
