Team Singapore clinches 3 golds, 4 bronzes at Para Swimming World Series in Melbourne

Singapore’s team of para swimmers bagged three golds, four bronzes and set multiple new personal bests at the Melbourne leg of the Citi Para Swimming World Series 2023.

The event, held from Feb 17 to 19 at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, saw seven Singapore para swimmers – Darren Chan, Danielle Moi, Sophie Soon, Colin Soon, Toh Wei Soong, Wong Zhi Wei and Yip Pin Xiu – taking part.

Paralympian Yip Pin Xiu clinched the gold medal in the Women’s 100m Backstroke Multi-class event on the first day. She then went on to win another gold in the Women’s 50m Backstroke Multi-class event on the last day.

Siblings Sophie and Colin also medalled on the first day of the event. Sophie won gold in the Women’s 50m Breaststroke Multi-class event while Colin clinched bronze in the Men’s 50m Breaststroke Multi-class event.

Toh Wei Soong captured two bronzes – one in the Men’s 50m Freestyle event and another in the Men’s 50m Fly event. Wei Soong tied with Australian Paralympic medalist Timothy Hodge in the Men’s 50m Fly event.

Danielle Moi earned her first Series medal with a bronze in the Women’s 200m Freestyle Multi-class event.

Wong Zhi Wei set a new personal best and national record in the SB13 Men’s 50m Breaststroke event, while Darren Chan set four new personal bests.

The Citi Para Swimming World Series will be held in Singapore from Apr 29 to May 1 later this year.
