This is the first time in 19 years the Singapore women’s team is competing at the Games.
Four players based overseas have been included in the Singapore women’s football team that will compete in the 31st SEA Games.
It is the first time that Singapore will be represented in the women’s football competition since 2003.
Defender Siti Rosnani Azman will don the national colours for the first time since Asean Football Federation Women’s Championship in August 2019. The 24-year-old currently plays for the Kibi International University in Japan, on loan from Athletic Club Kobe.
The other three oversea-based players in the squad are Putri Syaliza (Eastern Florida State, USA), Danelle Tan (Mill Hill School, England) and Nicole Lim (University of Edinburg, Scotland).
The women’s squad has an average of 22.9 years, and all 20 players in the team will make their SEA Games debuts. Ernie Sulastri, who has 44 caps, will captain the team.
Led by coach Stephen Ng, the team recently concluded an eight-day training camp in Thailand.
“I am confident the players will fight and put up a tough challenge for our opponents,” said Stephen.
“We may be underdogs going into the SEA Games, given it has been 19 years since Singapore has participated. Regardless, we will be focused on the team’s performance and want to make a statement to the region that the Singapore women’s national football team is a force to be reckoned with.”
The Singapore women’s football team are grouped with Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. The team will travel to Cam Pha on May 7 and kickoff their campaign against Thailand three days later.
All of Singapore’s matches will be streamed live on Mediacorp’s meWATCH platform, said FAS.
