Singapore women’s foil fencing team clinch top-8 finish at Fencing World Cup 2022
The women’s team stunned the world after defeating top-ranked USA in the round of 16 stage.
The Singapore national women’s foil fencing team achieved a top-eight finish in the Fencing World Cup.
The team, consisting of Amita Berthier, Maxine Wong, Cheung Kemei and Tay Yu Ling, pulled off a major upset in the tournament when they defeated top-ranked United States 44-41 in the round of 16.
Prior to that, they defeated Colombia (ranked 17th) 45-28 in the round of 32. The Singapore women’s team are ranked 16th in the world.
However, the team could not claim another scalp in the quarter-finals, as they lost 33-45 to eventual runners-up Germany (ranked eighth). Singapore finished eighth among 20 teams in the tournament, which was won by France.
The national men’s foil fencing team, ranked 25th in the world, finished in the top-16.
The team, consisting of Joel Chiu, Samuel Robson, Raphael Tan and Max Neo, started off strong in the competition after dispatching Brazil (ranked 18th) in the round of 32 stage with a score of 45-37.
The team however succumbed to defeat against Italy (ranked sixth) in the round of 16 stage with a score of 25-45, placing 16th overall in the men’s foil team category among 28 countries.
The men and women’s national fencing team will next compete in the upcoming SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam in May and the Asian Games in Huangzhou, China in September.
