Singapore to take on Thailand, Philippines in AFF Suzuki Cup 2020
Singapore will face five-time champions Thailand and 2018 semi-finalists Philippines in the group stages of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2020.
The biennial competition will take place from Dec 5, 2021 to Jan 1, 2022, following its postponement last year because of COVID-19. The tournament will be held in a yet-to-be-announced country to minimise travelling in the pandemic.
The virtual draw that was conducted on Tuesday (Sep 21) saw Singapore placed into Group A with Thailand, Philippines, Myanmar and either Timor Leste or Brunei.
Southeast Asia’s top-ranked football team Vietnam was drawn into Group B alongside Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia and Laos.
With four Suzuki Cup titles, Singapore are the second-most successful team in the tournament behind Thailand.
However, after winning its last title in 2012, Singapore were knocked out in the group stages in 2014, 2016 and 2018.
