Singapore to field over 500 athletes across 27 sports for 32nd SEA Games
The SEA Games will take place in Cambodia from May 5 to 17.
Over 500 athletes are selected to represent Singapore at the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) games, announced the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) on Tuesday (Jan 17).
According to SNOC, the contingent sees 517 athletes now but will be finalised “closer to the start of the Games”.
This decision came after the SNOC selection committee, chaired by its President Tan Chuan-Jin, met on Monday and considered nominations put forth by the National Sports Association (NSAs).
The 32nd SEA games will take place in Cambodia, from May 5 to 17. This also marks the first time that Cambodia will host the SEA Games. Singapore is set to host the 35th SEA Games in 2029.
The shortlisted athletes will represent Singapore across 27 sports, including Aquatics, Badminton, Table Tennis and E-sports.
The list includes familiar sporting names like Joseph Isaac Schooling, Pereira Veronica Shanti and Loh Kean Yew.
Athletes who have yet to meet the qualifying criteria have until February to do so for the Appeals Committee to consider, said the council.
Team Singapore’s contingent saw 424 athletes at the SEA Games in Vietnam last year. They competed across 33 sports and returned with 47 gold, 46 silver and 71 bronze medals.
The 2015 SEA Games – with 84 gold, 73 silver and 102 bronze medals – remains Singapore’s best performing Games. The 2017 edition in Kuala Lumpur stands as Singapore’s best away Games, with 58 gold, 59 silver and 71 bronze medals.
