Singapore to face Vietnam, Malaysia in Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022
Singapore has won the competition four times in the past, second only to Thailand with six competition titles.
Singapore will take on causeway rivals Malaysia in the group stages of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022.
The Lions were drawn into Group B of the regional biennial competition, which was previously known as the AFF Suzuki Cup on Thursday (Aug 30). Vietnam, Myanmar and Laos are the rest of the teams drawn into the group.
The competition is slated to take place later this year in Dec 23 to Jan 15 next year. It will feature a total of 10 ASEAN teams.
Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia and defending champions Thailand were drawn into Group A.
The fifth team of Group A will be decided in the qualifying round, where Brunei and Timor Leste will face each other over two legs to claim the final spot.
Singapore reached the semi-finals stage for the first time since 2012 in the previous edition of the competition, but suffered a 3-5 defeat to eventual runner-up Indonesia on aggregate.
The Lions have won the competition in 1998, 2004, 2007 and 2012, and are the second most successful team in the competition. Thailand currently sit on top with six titles, while Vietnam holds two titles and Malaysia holds one.
