Singapore Art Museum to launch art exhibitions in public spaces as part of long-term public art initiative

Appreciating artworks will soon be as convenient as taking a walk in the park in Singapore as the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) officially launched its long-term public art initiative titled the The Everyday Museum on Jul 13.

Starting from the Tanjong Pagar district, SAM aims to weave art into communal spaces such as neighbourhoods, public parks and public libraries over the next few years. These art projects and programmes will be accessible to the public for free.

The initiative also allows SAM to collaborate with different types of local and international artists and experiment with different styles and mediums of art. 

From Jul 15 this year to Jul 31, 2024, a new art exhibition inspired by Chinese opera and science fiction titled Wayang Spaceship will be presented as part of the The Everyday Museum. 

Located at the rear entrance of SAM at Tanjong Pagar Distripark, the exhibition uses the Singapore seaport as its backdrop. During the day, the artwork mirrors the seaport and the movement of its post-industrial surroundings. 

However, when the clock strikes 7pm every day, the spaceship is “activated” using light, sounds, and moving images to showcase the colourful Chinese opera scenes and costumes. 

Aiming to transform Singapore into an open-air museum, The Everyday Museum has an annual line-up of art commissions and programmes for the public, including the launch of a quadrennial International Public Art Festival. 

Details about two public art trails located in Tanjong Pagar district and along the Rail Corridor will be revealed in a few months as well.
