One Kampong Gelam celebrates local talent and heritage with GLAMboyant

The event is held in conjunction with Grand Prix Season Singapore 2022.

The Grand Prix Singapore Season (GPSS) is underway with the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix nearing. 

Kampong Gelam is holding its precinct activation, GLAMboyant, from Sep 23 to Oct 2. 

Organised by One Kampong Gelam (OKG), the event features various activities and performances within the precinct.

Here are five highlights to look out for:

1. Over 20 live performances

GLAMboyant has a large lineup of performers, including live bands TNT Live and Bushmen, buskers Jamiel Said and Kun, as well as DJ Arms and Naddz. Most of the performances will be held at the Aliwal Street carpark, with the exception of Sep 30, where it will be held at Haji Lane.

Entertainers Suhaimi Yusof, OKLETSGO! and True Horror Stories POV will also be performing on different nights from Sep 27 to 29. Their performances all begin at 8.30pm, at Aliwal Street car park.

There will also be street performances featuring Cucu Datok Mera, SRIWANA and The Samrah Club. 

Those interested can also visit Baghdad Street to catch dance battles between professional dance crews, or Bussorah Street for cultural performances on 29 Sep and 1 Oct, 8.30pm and 9.30pm.

2. Workshops and tours

The event will feature a series of workshops, including The Blackbook Studio’s daily graffiti crash course from 10am to 5pm. The workshop will cost $50 per hour and those interested can register for the workshop by sending The Blackbook Studio a direct message on Instagram

Guided art workshops by @liuwenchao, @otoitoi and @prettyyfreakyfantasy will also be held on subjects like upcycled bottle art, oil painting, mixed media and acrylic fluid art.

Those registering for any of these workshops will receive a complimentary entrance ticket to the Foodyard.

Guided tours around Kampong Gelam by Monster Day Tours, focused on the native people of Singapore and their history, will be available. There is also an experiential theatrical tour by Let’s Go Tour.

3. Movies and showcases

#Cinewav, the latest enterprise by filmmakers Christian Lee and Jason Chan, will provide outdoor screenings of different movies throughout the event at Sultan Gate Park. 

Some of the movies that will be shown include Spiderman No Way Home, Encanto, and The Matrix. Visitors can purchase their tickets via Klook.

There will also be an art showcase at Aliwal Arts Centre from Sep 28 Sep to Oct 2. OFF THE BLOCKS!!! is a multidisciplinary exhibition that looks at how 21 different artists examine their identities. 

The artists featured include AshD, KRINGE and ATOMICK. There is an Advisory 16 rating on the exhibition for some coarse language. Admission to the exhibition is free, and there are also free curatorial tours on Oct 1 and 2. 

Visitors can also catch a live painting showcase by emerging artists from Sep 30 to Oct 2.

4. BMX Competition

Airdroz Bike Skills Academy will hold a BMX competition at Sultan Gate throughout the GLAMboyant event. This will include workshops, bike clinics and a showcase by Tuah Enterprise on Oct 1 and Oct 2. 

Being the first in Singapore with an airbag training compound, Airdroz will hold airbag jump sessions on Sep 26, 28 and 30.

5. The Foodyard

There will be 10 food trucks from Sunset Rocket at Aliwal Street car park offering items from Picanhas, Syukor Burger and Satay Man. 

The food trucks will be open throughout the GLAMboyant event, from 3pm to 11pm on Monday to Thursdays and from 12pm to 11pm on Fridays to Sundays.
