After 16 years, the beloved characters are finally returning to the cinemas.
The world’s most famous frenemies are back. That’s right – Tom and Jerry are returning to the silver screen in 2021 with the movie Tom & Jerry.
In a trailer released by Warner Bros. Pictures, the iconic duo is seen waving goodbye to each other – until Jerry tricks Tom into getting run over a bus.
They reunite when Jerry moves into a fancy hotel in New York and Tom is hired to get rid of him. The rivalry between them is rekindled as mischievous Jerry leads Tom on a cat and mouse chase throughout the hotel.
The comedy movie uses a mix of live-action and 3D-animated elements, akin to other nostalgic movies with childhood favourites, such as Pokémon Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog. The movie’s animators used techniques similar to those seen in 2D animation to maintain the look, feel and spirit of the original Tom & Jerry series.
The movie’s star-studded line-up includes actors Chloë Grace Moretz, Michael Peña and Ken Jeong.
Even with new actors, the movie’s roots have not been forgotten. It pays tribute to the original series by starring William Hanna, the long-time voice actor of both Tom and Jerry, who will continue voicing the pair. Archival recordings of previous voice actors have also been used.
The movie is set to be released in the United States on Mar 5 next year. Its release date in Singapore is yet to be confirmed.
