Fans and creators of comics will have a new common space to indulge in their passion with Comic Embassy — an initiative by SG Cartoon Resource Hub which will spotlight young talents in the local scene.

The space at Tekka Place Shopping Mall will serve as a collaborative centre for artists to network and showcase Singapore comics, illustrations and sequential art and is set to launch on Jul 16.

The initiative is supported through a grant from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and is part of a collaborative placemaking project for the community called Tekka 1001

“The Embassy hopes to create opportunities for local comic artists to be in the spotlight and to connect emerging artists and students with veterans in the industry,” said Mr Ho See Kum, the founder of SG Cartoon Resources.

Two ambassadors will be invited each month from June to August to showcase their works and organise workshops, talks and demonstrations for the public.

Introductory articles on the history of comics in Singapore will also be featured alongside books, publications and merchandise that will be for sale.

An intuitive character design workshop will also be held on Jul 17 and Jul 30 to further enhance the experience.

Mr Ho said: “The ecosystem for Singapore comics is heavily influenced by Japanese manga or America’s DC and Marvel comics.

“This is not to say that it is a bad thing, but we should focus on creating our own Singapore-brand of content.”

The Embassy can be found at Basement One of the Tekka Place Shopping Mall.
