A new augmented reality (AR) Bukit Gombak walking trail was launched on Jul 2 by the South West Community Development Council (CDC).

Titled Heartland Gems @ South West AR Trail, the AR trail features 15 different unique scenic spots in Bukit Gombak such as nature park Little Guilin and local food that can be found at the Neighbourhood Food Centre.

This allows residents to learn about the history behind some of their usual hang-out spots through the use of AR technology.

The trail can be accessed by downloading the Locomole app on a smartphone and scanning the various QR codes located at strategic spots along the trails.

Each QR code will display more information about the location such as interesting facts, history about the spots, stories of hawkers and merchants, as well as let you play games and take photos with 3D AR objects.

A group of seven students from the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) played a part in designing the heart-shaped logo that integrates street icons and the community. On top of that, they were also responsible for some of the content that was featured in the AR trail.

Kua Hui Ming, a year one student from SIT’s Digital Communications and Integrated Media degree programme that was part of the team said: “We hope that through the logo, the public will be enticed to step into the digital realm of our vibrant and cherished heritage gems found in our midst.”
