For the first time in 34 years, a Miss Singapore was placed in the Miss Universe.

This year’s edition of the beauty pageant – the 70th Miss Universe held – saw Singapore’s Nandita Banna finishing in the top 16.

The Miss Universe crown was won by India’s Harnaaz Sandhu.

Paraguay’s Nadia Ferreira finished runner-up, while South Africa’s Lalela Mswane finished third.

This year’s edition was held on Monday (Dec 13) at Universe Dome in Eilat, Israel.

Nandita had originally beat seven other finalists to win the Miss Universe Singapore pageant on Sept 17.

The 21-year-old is a business management and information systems major from the Singapore Management University. She had signed up for the competition in Singapore to simply push herself out of her comfort zone.

The last Miss Singapore to be placed was Marion Nicole Teo, who finished in the top 10 in 1987.
