IMPACT 0572: A BOLD VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS

Hello! I’m Charmaine Yap. I am a lawyer and a legislative assistant – which means I assist a Member of Parliament in raising issues in Parliament through speeches and questions.

Of the issues that we have raised in Parliament, low-wage migrant workers is a cause that is particularly close to my heart. I have heard many stories from workers of excessive agent fees, illegal kickbacks, unjustified salary deductions, among others. It breaks my heart the most when I hear workers who have accepted these injustices as necessary sacrifices for a better life for their families. These are injustices that no person, Singaporean or migrant, should accept.

The ability to speak up and be heard is a privilege and a responsibility. There are many who cannot do the same. It is important to me that I use the voice that I have as a lawyer, a legislative assistant, and a citizen to make sure that we always strive towards doing good and doing better.

Whatever you choose to do, leave tracks. That means don’t do it just for yourself. You will want to leave the world a little better for your having lived. Fight for the things that you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.
