IMPACT 0419: MEDICINE AND PAGEANTRY: AN UNLIKELY UNION

Hello! My name is Cate Lin, a 19-year-old medical student and aspiring model. In 2021, I was a Top 8 finalist for Miss Universe and won the subsidiary title as Top Model in Miss World Singapore.

While I was new to the pageant competition circuit, I come from a family of titleholders. My mother was Miss World Singapore 1994, while my sister was a Top 10 finalist in Miss Universe Singapore 2018. This family tradition is something I hold close to my heart, because it shows that pageantry is more than just a pretty face- beauty sparks confidence. Furthermore, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to share matters that are important to you, as well as a platform which is able to help shape young ladies into the strong, independent women of our world today.

I also chose to pursue a career path as a doctor, after learning about a rare genetic disorder- Protein C Deficiency- which led to a pulmonary embolism my mother suffered and recovered from.  I’m passionate about advocating healthcare equity and accessibility as I believe medicine should be available for those who are in need, when they need it. We should all be able to strive to continue living a happy and healthy life. And like Mahatma Gandhi says, “It is health that is real wealth”.
