IMPACT 0413: CREATING A CARING COMMUTER CULTURE THROUGH ART

Hello! I’m Priscilla Ong and I’m a student at Republic Polytechnic. In 2021, I was given the opportunity to join Project CompassioNATION, an initiative to build a caring commuter culture in Singapore. My role was to design a care map and three murals with caring messages for Woodlands Integrated Transport Hub.

Some of the messages I came up with were: “Are you ready to lend a hand?”, “Let’s help one another and show that we care” and “Step forward, make a difference, be that special someone”.

I have always had a passion for drawing. Through my work on the murals, I hope to inspire commuters to step up and help one another by displaying different acts of care to vulnerable commuters.

Although it was a tough journey to design the murals while coping with my schoolwork, the experience has trained me to be more disciplined and allowed me to spend more time on meaningful things. I’m glad to have taken up this opportunity – it makes me happy to see the smiles on people’s faces after they have received my help.

I believe that all of us can contribute to making a difference to someone’s commuting journey through our actions. As long as you’re willing to step up and offer help, you are already making a big difference.

“We can’t help everyone, but everyone can help someone.”
