IMPACT 0018: FICTIONAL STORIES WITH REAL IMPACT
Darren Chen, 24, is the author of The Good Guys, a story about superheroes that deals with not just good versus evil, but inner turmoil and mental health. It covers issues such as hurt, loss and trauma, and is also a reflection of the pressing issues in his, as well as his readers’ lives.
His superhero novel has since inspired and empowered others around him to create and share their own stories. The Good Guys is also longlisted for the 2020 Epigram Books Fiction Prize.
“I THINK IT’S IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO HAVE A SPACE TO TELL THE STORIES THEY WANT TO TELL.”
“FOR ME IT’S THE ACT OF MAKING SOMETHING NEW FROM NOTHING, AND BEING ABLE TO ENJOY THE VALUE OF CREATING THINGS.”
