How are athletes in Singapore keeping fit during circuit breaker?

Our Singaporean athletes aren't taking a break, even if their usual training sessions have been suspended.

It’s been almost two weeks since the circuit breaker measures kicked in.

While all sporting activities have been stopped, some Singapore athletes have found ways to continue working out – without breaking the law, of course! – and ensure they remain in tip-top condition. With the closure of facilities like public gyms and open-air stadiums, most have resorted to training from their own homes.

What have they been up to? We find out below…

CHASE TAN

Singapore basketball national team shooting guard Chase Tan has gone for regular runs alone in order to keep his fitness levels up and he has been documenting his runs on his Insta stories.

Of course, Chase is also an actor so there’s added incentives for him to stay fit (and maintain his good looks, we are sure). At the very least, he’s been practicing safe distancing!

SINGAPORE SLINGERS

As a way to encourage their fans to stay at home, players from the Singapore professional basketball team, Delvin Goh, Jay Lin, Desmond Oh and Tay Ding Loon, came up with simple basketball drills that one can do at home.

Some of these can even be performed together with your loved ones, as Delvin demonstrates in a video on the Slingers’ Facebook page.

KERSTIN ONG

National hurdler and TeamSG athlete Kerstin Ong has been pretty active at home, judging from the videos uploaded on her Instagram page.

Kerstin has been focusing on her back and leg muscles, even incorporating equipment, such as weights and resistance bands, to shake things up a little and make it more interesting. No excuses for skipping leg day now…

Now that’s a proper workout.

ZAINOL GULAM

With the current Singapore Premier League season suspended indefinitely, Geylang International’s goalkeeper Zainol Gulam has been diligently working out on his own with the FitLight trainer, a speed and agility training system which utilises lights to improve reaction.

This is on top of the virtual workout sessions on Zoom he has with his coaches and team-mates. Talk about dedication to improve yourself!

PANG SHENG JUN

The national swimmer has been rather active on Instagram during this circuit breaker period to say the least.

Having uploaded a short clip of his five favourite home workout exercises, Pang has also started a challenge using the Instagram Live feature. Named the #PangdemicChallenge (so puny that we love it!), he challenges a fellow athlete from the region in a 16-minute live workout video, with fans later getting to vote who they feel has done it better!

Pang has shared his favourite home workout exercises on his Instagram account too.

Having seen what these athletes have been up to, how about trying out some of the exercises yourself too? In the meantime do remember to stay safe, stay home and we will get through this together.
