Full local wildcard list unveiled for Singapore Smash 2023; Singapore to feature in all categories
The local wildcards will be led by women’s world No. 55 Zeng Jian.
Five up-and-coming local table tennis stars – Goi Rui Xuan, Izaac Quek, Tan Zhao Yun, Lucas Tan and Dominic Koh – were unveiled as wildcards in the singles events of the Singapore Smash 2023 on Thursday (Feb 16).
They join the earlier list of local wildcards announced in January, namely Zhou Jingyi, Wong Xin Ru, Clarence Chew, Koen Pang, Ser Lin Qian, Zhang Wanling, Ethan Poh and Josh Chua.
Clarence and Ethan will once again represent Singapore in the men’s doubles. The duo stunned the 2019 World Championship doubles silver medallists enroute to the men’s doubles quarterfinals at last year’s Singapore Smash.
The wildcards will be led by compatriot and women’s world No. 55 Zeng Jian. She will compete in the women’s singles and mixed doubles events.
Zeng Jian, who is the highest-ranked active local player in the field, shared that she is “very much looking forward” to the upcoming Singapore Smash.
“It’s a gathering of the world’s best players. I’ll prepare well and do my best to enjoy the experience, and I hope spectators in Singapore come out to cheer us on,” she added.
Singapore Smash is one of World Table Tennis’ pinnacle events. The 2023 edition will feature 64 player men’s and women’s singles and 24-pair doubles and mixed competitions.
The Singapore Smash 2023 will be held at the Singapore Sports Hub’s OCBC Arena from Mar 7 to 19.
Tickets to the qualifying rounds, which will take place from Mar 7 to 9, start at $18. Tickets to the main draw, which will take place Mar 11 to 19, start at $28. Those interested can purchase their tickets from Ticketmaster.
