The talks are part of Green Market, an annual event highlighting sustainable living.
Members of the public can attend various talks exploring the significance of local wildlife at Punggol Regional Library from Jun 10 to 11.
The talks are part of Green Market, an annual event highlighting sustainable living organised by National Library Board (NLB).
With the theme Celebrating Nature: The Weird & Wonderful, the latest edition of Green Market aims to raise awareness on Singapore’s extensive biodiversity and encourage participants to cherish and protect the environment.
As of Jun 6, in-person entry to all programmes are fully subscribed. However, interested parties can still register for the Zoom broadcast of the talks.
Participants can look forward to learning fun facts and engaging storytelling sessions like Wild Punggol: Human-Wildlife Relationships, Then and Now, Birds: Of Names and Folklore and Fantastic Fungi: More than Meets the Eye.
Wild Punggol: Human-Wildlife Relationships, Then and Now will cover the history of Punggol’s wildlife, pig farms and private zoos.
When Punggol Beach was used as an entry point for invasion during world war two, orders were issued to relocate the animals from the Punggol Zoo so that the area could be used for defence.
When this order was not met, the birds were freed and the animals were shot. Using archival records and taking reference from museum specimens, this talk explores Punggol’s biodiversity history and its human-wildlife interactions, then and now.

Wild Punggol: Human-Wildlife Relationships, Then and Now will be held from 11am to 12pm on Jun 10. Interested participants can sign up here.
Bird lovers can look forward to Birds: Of Names and Folklore, a talk by the Singapore Birds Project exploring the cultural significance of local birds, their names and the histories behind them.

The Singapore Birds Project aims to showcase and record Singapore’s birds by providing resources on each species while covering various topics including ecology, identification, and science.
Birds: Of Names and Folklore will take place from 10.30am to 11.30am on Jun 11. Interested participants can sign up here.
Fantastic Fungi: More than Meets the Eye will cover the special properties of Fungi, including decomposition, serving as biofertilizers, controlling populations of pests and relaxing competition between species.

The talk will take place 4pm to 5.30pm on Jun 10. Interested participants can sign up here.
The in-person event will also feature various activities like board games as well as booths run by green businesses and environmental awareness groups.
