Our parents have told us countless times that fast food is unhealthy. Yet, as we grow up, McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) and other restaurants have become our go-to places when we cannot decide what we want to eat, or when we need a quick meal.

Other than the usual menu items, there are seasonal items that have captured our hearts and taste buds.

If we had our way, we would want these five seasonal fast food items to stay on the menus forever.

1. Twister fries

You can tell how good a fast food restaurant is by tasting their french fries. I thought the usual golden shoestring fries were good, until I tasted McDonald’s twister fries.

The twister fries, which are always crispy and fluffy, are seasoned well with a hint of spice, making it a tastier treat than the usual french fries. It is no wonder Singaporeans are crazy about twister fries!

2. Baked potatoes

Besides the usual french fries, mashed and baked potatoes are popular sides offered in most fast food restaurants. If you need a change from your usual order of fries, perhaps the sight of melted butter and sour cream spread all over the potato will leave you salivating.

It is a unique way of using the potato, and it sure is a filling treat!

3. Rice burgers

Though MOS Burger sells the rice burger and is known for it, the one that I miss the most comes from McDonald’s.

They used to have the rice burgers in two flavours: chicken and beef. I vividly remember having the chicken rice burger for lunch whenever food was unavailable at home. I always look forward to chomping on the juicy chicken patties, but the 10-year-old me could never handle the spice.

Relief for the spice comes in the form of the cool, crunchy purple cabbage or glasses of water if it was not enough. Aside from childhood memories of the burger, it was a filling and hearty meal that could easily be someone’s go to lunch order.

4. Waffles and ice cream

This inexpensive dessert item was one of the things I looked forward to whenever I visit A&W. (Yes, we used to have the luxury of dining at A&W at our shores.) Tucking into warm waffles with a scoop of ice cream was the best way to end your meal of deep-fried chicken or burgers.

5. Shaker fries

Shaker fries gives you the best reason to upsize your meal.

The little flavor packet may not seem like much, but the magic happens once you toss it with your fries in a paper bag–these shaker fries are so tasty that some have resorted to creating their own shaker fries recipe.

Besides popular flavours like wasabi, honey chipotle and cheese, my favourite would be the seaweed. It delivers a wonderful garlic flavour which goes well with the earthiness of dried seaweed flakes.
