Filmgarde Cineplexes will cease operations at their Bugis+ and Century Square cinemas by March 2022, following the expiration of the current leases at the two malls.

The two outlets will be progressively closed for reinstatement works starting in the first quarter of 2022.

The move is part of the company’s new business roadmap that reflects the changing trends in the industry.

“The film industry, like many others, has undergone tremendous changes in this era of digitalisation,” Mr Sherman Ong, Head of Operations Cinema Operations at Filmgarde, said. “As such, we feel that with the expiry of our leases, it is timely for us to shift our investments to focus on developing new areas of growth within the media industry and to expand our presence in other sectors, so as to keep pace with market demands.”

All staff from the two cinemas will be retained and redeployed across other divisions in the company, such as its property and hospitality businesses.

The remaining outlet at Leisure Park Kallang –  the first Filmgarde cinema – will continue operations as per usual.  However, plans for the outlet will be announced at a later date.
