Singaporeans will have a new option in the dairy aisles with the launch of Asia’s first animal-free milk Very Dairy on Tuesday (Nov 29).

In a press release on Tuesday, Very Dairy stated that the milk is lactose, cholesterol and hormone free. It is also vegan-friendly, and has low sugar and saturated fat levels.

Very Dairy is produced with the world’s first animal-free whey protein developed from precision fermentation technology, which is similar to the process of making bread or beer.

This protein was first developed by biotechnology company Perfect Day in 2020, and is made by microflora like bacteria and fungi to have an identical nature to the whey protein that can be found in traditional milk.

After the microflora is given plant sugar and the genetic code for whey protein, it goes through a fermentation process and is converted into the animal-free whey protein.

According to Very Dairy, the whey production process is more sustainable compared to conventional methods since it uses no animals, reduces water consumption by up to 99 per cent, emits up to 97 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions and uses up to 60 per cent less non-renewable energy.

Very Dairy is the second product released in Singapore using Perfect Day’s animal-free milk protein, with the first being California-founded company Coolhaus’ animal-free ice cream earlier this year.

Very Dairy milk is available in three flavours: Plain, Strawberry and Chocolate. It is available at FairPrice, Cold Storage, Giant HyperMarket and RedMart at $4.95 per litre.
