Singaporean director Anthony Chen’s film, The Breaking Ice, has been selected as Singapore’s entry to the Oscars in 2024 by the Singapore Film Commission.

The film will be under the 96th Academy Awards’ Best International Film category.

The Breaking Ice premiered at the Un Certain Regard section of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival where it received a seven-minute standing ovation from a 1000-strong audience.

Anthony Chen’s renowned works, Ilo Ilo and Wet Season, had been previously chosen to represent Singapore in the Academy Awards. Last year’s submission to the same category, Ajoomma, was produced by him and directed by He Shuming.

The local filmmaker expressed his honour in having his work selected as Singapore’s Oscar submission this year. “This film wouldn’t have been possible without the creative talents and passion of our very international team. I look forward to sharing this film with audiences in the States and around the world,” he said.

Starring notable Chinese actors Zhou Dongyu, Liu Haoran and Qu Chuxiao, The Breaking Ice depicts the friendship between the three main characters during a winter weekend in isolation. It also explores the anxieties, hopes and dreams faced by Chinese youth.

The Breaking Ice was first released in Singapore on Sep 7, and is still showing at The Projector and Golden Village cinemas.
