The central business district’s (CBD) well-known hawker centre, Amoy Street Food Centre, reopened on Monday (Jan 10).

The food centre located at 7 Maxwell Road had been closed for three months since October 2021 for renovation and redecoration works.

According to the National Environment Agency (NEA), the food centre went through repainting works, mechanical and electrical works, replacement of sanitary pipes and kitchen exhaust motors, and toilet improvements.

Apart from new wall and ceiling fans that improve ventilation, there are also new ceiling LED lights.

With 90 per cent of the original stalls coming back, around half of the food stalls have already reopened. The popular Han Kee Fish Soup stall will only reopen after the Chinese New Year holiday.

While temporary closure of hawker centres affects both patrons and stallholders, NEA has emphasised the importance of proper management of these spaces “so that they continue to be places where people from all walks of life can enjoy affordable food in a clean and hygienic environment.”
