When it comes to the hair game in Singapore, colours other than the conventional black or brown may come off as loud or weird. But this does not make youths shy away from bold colours and funky haircuts.

In fact, that is exactly what these five trending hairstyles of 2020 are all about!

1. Ear loop highlights

A 90s throwback, ear loop highlights are a mashup of natural tones on top and a pop of colour underneath. They’re called ear loop highlights because they generally stay hidden until you tuck your hair behind your ears, or do a half-tie.

Due to the pandemic, our faces are concealed by masks most of the time, making it difficult to show our personality (or tell each other apart sometimes). Ear loop highlights help to draw attention to your face since it is mainy visible from the front, giving people something fun to focus on.

2. E-girl hair streaks

This hairstyle has graced the heads of your favourite K-pop and Hollywood stars.

Not only does the E-girl hair streaks give you a badass and edgy vibe, it also helps to frame your face, making it look slimmer and smaller.

Since this hairstyle only requires your fringe to be bleached, you won’t have to worry too much about dead ends and breakages.

It can also look like you dyed your whole head if you tie all your hair up, leaving the dyed portion down. PHOTO CREDIT: INSTAGRAM/@JENNIERUBYJANE

3. Curtain bangs

Getting bangs is never an easy decision but curtain bangs are so versatile and effortless, you don’t have to worry about not being able to pull it off!

This hairstyle trend is perfect for those with round and square faces as it helps to elongate the appearance of your face.

They are versatile when long enough to be tucked behind the ears, but can also be cut for a shorter look.

There are also many ways to style curtain bangs – wavy hair, messy ponytail, side-swept braids, messy bun, half-tie… the list goes on!

4. Modern mullet

Also known as the cool girl hairstyle, the 80s mullet is back, but this time with a modern twist.

Traditionally, the mullet is short at the front but longer and wispier at the back. While the short and choppy fringe still remains, the modern mullet is more relaxed and layered, which makes it more wearable.

5. Indie girl hair beads

Fierce and edgy, this is probably the most unexpected hairstyle trend of 2020.

Inspired by box braids back in the 90s, the indie girl hairstyle is about braiding two small sections of your hair, often the fringe, which is then uplifted with colourful beads.

Unlike the traditional box braids which stretch across your entire head, the modern way only requires two sections of your hair on each side of your head to be braided.
